We anticipate a probate matter based on the limitations below will take between 15 and 20 hours per work at £220.00 per hour plus VAT. The total costs for our time spent on your matter are estimated to be between £2,500 and £3,500 plus VAT.
We will handle the full process for you. This quote is for estates where (depending on individual circumstances):
- There is a valid Will
- There is no more than one property
- There are no more than 2 bank or building society accounts
- There are no other tangible assets
- There are no more than 4 beneficiaries
- There are no disputes between beneficiaries on division of assets. If disputes arise this is likely to lead to an increase in costs
- There is no Inheritance Tax payable and the Executors do not need to submit a full account to HMRC
- There are no claims made against the estate
- There are no more than two Executors
- There are no shareholdings
The exact cost will depend upon the individual circumstances in each case. For example, if there is one beneficiary and no property the costs will be at the lower end of the scale. If there are multiple beneficiaries, a property and multiple bank accounts, the costs will be at the higher end of the scale.
As well as the estimated charges above covering time spent on your matter, we will also charge an additional fee depending upon the value of the particular estate. This is based upon 1% of the total value of the estate minus any property value.
Disbursements not included in this fee:
- Probate application fee of £273.00 (plus £1.50 per each further copy required)
- Bankruptcy-only Land Charges Department searches (£3.00 per beneficiary)
- £175.00 post in the London Gazette and local newspaper – protects against unexpected claims from unknown creditors
Disbursements are costs related to your matter that are payable to third parties, such as court fees. We handle the payment of the disbursements on your behalf to ensure a smoother process.
Potential additional costs:
- If there is no Will or the estate consists of any share holdings (stocks and bonds) there is likely to be additional costs that could range significantly depending on the estate and how it is to be dealt with. We can give you a more accurate quote once we have more information.
- Dealing with the sale or transfer of any property in the estate is not included
- If funds are to be telegraphically transferred to a bank account on your instruction, this attracts an additional fee of £36.00 which includes VAT.
- If a full Inheritance Tax account is required for HMRC.
How long will this take?
On average, estates that fall within this range are dealt with within 4-6 months. Typically, obtaining the Grant of Probate takes 4-6 weeks.* Collecting assets then follows, which can take between 3-4 weeks. Once this has been done, we can distribute the assets, which normally takes 3-4 weeks.
Where a house sale is involved, this will take longer, (as an estimate), approximately 6-8 weeks.
* It’s important to note that each individual case is different. We’ll be able to provide you with a more accurate quote following an initial consultation.
